   I myself had the same problem but after many problems I found it out. It is easy and it may sound stupid, since it was to me after I found it out, lol.

   Well first enter that cheat code while you are playing the game. (L, L, R, X, X, Up) to enable the Cheat Statue. Now here is the main part. This will not show up at your house. Instead you need to go to the town center and there will be a Plumbbob Statue (Diamond) in the front near the sidewalk all the way to the left (if you are looking at the entire towncenter)

   Now there will already be a Max Motive… and a Directly Control Pet option when you click on it. Here are some other codes:
   Triangle, Up, Left, Down, Right – This is the Simoleons code (The money – $10,000)

   and this is for Pet Points:
   Triangle, Circle, X, Square, L, R

   That’s all I know. Also if you restart the game or anything like that you will need to re-enter the codes for the statue to be there. Hope this helps! Have fun

   I’ve had the same problem. I don’t know what the deal is. It worked for me when I hit the L button 2 times but held it down for a few seconds at the end. I’m not too happy with it myself.
